MEP Anna Cavazzini and MEP Helmut Scholz invite you to the online launch of the Greenpeace & Veblen Institute study:
The seminar will bring together Mathilde Dupré, co-author of the report, a representative of DG Trade, Pierre Cochard and MEPs from several political groups.
It comes ahead of the expected revision of the sustainable development chapters of trade agreements
How well do EU trade agreements take into account the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals? For over two decades now, the European Commission has been relying on the findings of the Sustainability Impact Assessments (SIAs) it commissions as its main „sustainability check“ for trade negotiations.
Yet while the European Ombudsperson and the European Court of Auditors have ruled that the Commission has not complied with its own rules on SIAs on multiple different occasions in the past years, no comprehensive independent analyses had been carried out so far to evaluate the quality of the content of the assessments.
Greenpeace therefore commissioned a study with the aim to review and evaluate the EU‘s Sustainability Impact Assessments of trade agreements. The study identifies what has been working well and what has not, and sets forward recommendations for improvements.
The webinar will take place from 4 to 5 pm online and in English.
